Local beach cafe wins prestigious National award
23 Feb 2009
"We have a winning formula and feel strongly that in the run up to 2012 our goal is to hone and refine further what we've got going."
Steve Attrill, owner of the Hive Beach Café at Burton Bradstock, West Dorset, has scooped Coast magazine's 2009 Award for Best Coastal Café, Pub or Restaurant. Coast is one of The National Magazine Company's flagship titles and for the Hive to receive such an accolade is fabulous news for Steve, his staff and the suppliers. The panel of judges, which included TV presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff, were particularly impressed by the use of locally sourced fish.
"We're thrilled and honoured that all the hard work has been recognised." said Steve. "We combine quality produce with fish and seafood, landed mainly in Lyme Bay. Our menu reflects the wonderful diversity of what's available in the South West, including English wines." As an example, The Hive serves simple and sophisticated food, from egg and bacon breakfast baps to Lulworth hand-dived scallops with chorizo, pancetta and black pudding.
Steve Attrill has developed the business over the last 18 years. With a background in catering he has an eye for food trends and continues to add features to The Hive such as creating new patio areas and ensuring support for environmentally friendly, sustainable fishing. As to the future, he has no doubts. "We have a winning formula and feel strongly that in the run up to 2012 our goal is to hone and refine further what we've got going. The Hive is a great venue and we very much intend to be a credit to the region. This truly is the time for all local businesses to be worthy of being a winning team in a world event!
