Thousands attend 1,000 days to go event
02 Nov 2009
Saturday 31st 2009 saw the usual suspects of witches, ghouls and pumpkins for Halloween. However 2009 was a double celebration as it marked 1,000 days to go until the start of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The evening started with a spooky lantern lit walk from Portland Castle to the world class sailing venue and from here the celebrations got into full swing. Around 3,000 enthusiasts turned up for the event, held at Portland Marina, and enjoyed live music, street dance performances, face painting, and a winter bbq. Double Olympic medalist sailor Simon Hiscocks of Fortuneswell, Portland was there to award prizes for best Halloween fancy dress and best pumpkin lantern. At 20:12 the party goers were encouraged to make as much noise as possible to celebrate the 1,000 days to go landmark which was followed by a spectacular firework display - the biggest Portland has ever hosted.
Revive Portland were the organisation behind the event which captured an inspiring community spirit; smiles, laughter and an incredible atmosphere was felt throughout. Big congratulations to the 14 local young street dancers who had put together and perfected an incredible routine for the occasion - in just 5 days!
