AdiZone is a true 2012 legacy
08 Dec 2009
Friday 4 December 2009 saw the official opening of the first ever adiZone in the South West of England at Redlands Community Sports Hub.
Clr Angus Campbell, elected leader of Dorset performed the honours with Weymouth College chairman of governors Tony Alford.
Youngsters were the first to try out various exercise machines on the adiZone outdoor facility - which proudly bears the Olympic rings - at Redlands Community Sport Hub on Dorchester Road. Paralympic cyclist Darren Kenny, aged 39, handed out gold medals to the youngsters from local schools who attended the ceremony.
Funded by Weymouth College and Dorset County Council, the adiZone is an exciting new (free to use) multi-sport outdoor gym facility, designed to inspire the local community to get more active in the run up to the 2012 Games. The permanent extension will measure 625sq metres and will provide sporting facilities inspired by Olympic and Paralympic sports including basketball, football, a tennis area, a climbing wall and an outdoor gym. There will also be an open area for dance, aerobics and gymnastics, and the centre will be open 365 days of the year.
The adiZone is a true legacy out of the 2012 Games for the local community and supports the region's legacy objective of Sports and Culture by getting more people engaged with sport and activity.
