ISSF 2010 World SHotgun Cup Dorset logo

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shotgun World Cup comes to Dorset in May 2010, and it'll bring major benefits to the region. The event is being staged at the Southern Counties Shooting Ground near Dorchester. With over 400 competitors and an influx of support teams and spectators, there will be an early boost to the local tourist industry. Hotels are already taking bookings, with many visitors combining the event with a visit to the World Heritage coast.

Ian Turner of Southern Counties Shootingsaid  "We are very proud to be hosting the 2010 World Cup. Being chosen above all the other venues is a great reward for all the investment and effort that has been put into the shooting ground by the owners and the dedicated team at the ground over the past few years".

"Southern Counties Shooting is probably the best shooting venue in the UK. We have the latest Laporte traps. All are computer controlled with the competition scores immediately displayed in the clubhouse. Our facilities are excellent for competitors and spectators alike".

"We hope to attract many "new to shooting" spectators, which will be good for the future of the sport. We know that this event will bring lots of new visitors to the area".

This event has been chosen by the ISSF General Assembly as one of four Shotgun World Cup events in 2010. The event will have the three Olympic Shotgun Disciplines of Skeet, Trap and Double Trap, and will mirror the Olympic shot gun programme, with Skeet and Trap competition for men and women, and Double Trap for the men.

This will be the first time the UK has ever held a Shotgun World Cup event - ranked only behind the World Championships and Olympic Games in importance.

Lucy Crickmore an Events Consultant from UK Sport commented: "As the lead agency for sport in the UK, it's our remit to try and bring over strategically important events in the lead up to 2012. The Shotgun World Cup is certainly one of those".

"There are three main areas that are of key importance to UK Sport in particular. The first of which is home advantage, offering our GB athletes the opportunity to compete on home soil with the benefit of home crowds, less travel and everything that's associated with that to help improved performance. Secondly, it's working with the officials from the national governing bodies. We help them to hone their skills in the lead up to the games themselves. Finally we work with the recruitment and retainment of volunteers, particularly in the local region but in the country as a whole".

"It's a fantastic buzz for the region. The event itself should get some fantastic performances from the GB shooters themselves, and the people in the region will hopefully have a great time".

The Shotgun World Cup event takes place at the Southern Counties Shooting Ground near Dorchester between May 11th - 20th 2010.
